Unable to change Assignee in New Card

This problem is being faced and I am not sure if itis a configuration problem or what. When we select new card to create a task or story the assignee shows the text AUTO ASSIGNEE written. If we leave it like that and create the task or story the assignee get automatically set to the project lead which is indeed the default setting. But we woudl like to change teh assignee on this screen itself. The text box allows us to write the desired names, but does not recognise the same from the user list of JIRA. and throws error : Assignee: Failed to set field

On edit screen or using Create Issue screen of JIRA this problem is not encountered for the assignee fields. COuld you suggest the resolution. Thanks in advance.
