The EMPTY for text field custom field

Is EMPTY the value for a custom field of type "Text Field (<255 characters)" when there is no input into this field?

I guess this only applies for JIRA version 4.x and up. When I posted the question, it was version 3.x.

Yes when you do an advance search to find issue where a text field has no value you can mention EMPTY as a value . e.g. : "textfield" is EMPTY .
