is there a script I could rename a group in Jira? I have script runner.

Not be me. It's one of the last "non-renamable" things, now that they have done user names and project keys.

Was this script ever created?  Seems like renaming a group would be something the application allows within the gui, but I don't see it as an option.

It would be similar code to renaming a user, but there is nothing written, at least by me.
