Migration from svn to git: We really need a local computer running git to do this?

rick stuart April 22, 2013

It sounds like SVN at atlassian will be discontinued. And that it will be replaced with a GIT server also run by atlassian but (confusingly) has it's own (yet another) name and domain. Is that correct? Also, I have been tasked to make this switch for my group. I scanned the 1st page of the "Migration from Subversion to Git on Bitbucket" and am a bit surprised that the process requires me to setup a computer here (next to me) that runs GIT. No real problem. But I sure was not expecting to have to do that. Am reading the correct instructions?

-thanks

Hi Rick,

Yes, you have read the correct instructions. You'll need to setup a local GIT repository just to perform an SVN2GIT process and then push your data to GIT repo in Bitbucket.

Cheers,
