How does the "The Color Custom Field" plugin work?

So it is just a color "flag" in its own field? I can't color and existing field based on the field contents? I can't have the flag field's color set by the value in another field?

Custom field is based on Select List. Administrator fills custom field with color values (string, integers and hex are supported)
