How do you show a burn up of hours for a task?

Veronica Stewart January 17, 2013

We are using the time tracking for our scrum board. The task has an estimated hours of completion during planning and the person who picks up the task will burn down the hours using remaining time field. How do you show when the person estimated a task for 2 hours and comes to the stand-up and says he/she burned 2 hours yesterday, but has 2 hours remaining today in order to complete the task?

If they updated the tasks it would show 2 which would be flat in the reports.

Scrum is all about remaining hours. The number of hours spent is in fact immaterial. While doing log work, they should not select adjust automatically, rather enter 2h remaining. Please note 'remaining' IS NOT 'estimate' - 'spent'. It is always on actual remaining.

When a user closes a task (move task to done on board) the screen pops-up to log time.

The time tracking has these options:

  • Logging Work options
    • Time Spent - the amount of time logged working on the issue so far or while performing this JIRA operation.
    • Date Started - the date and time when you started this unit of work.
    • Remaining Estimate- the amount of time anticipated to resolve the issue after completing this unit of work. You can adjust this value using the following options:
      • Adjust Automatically - adjusts the Remaining Estimate value by subtracting the amount of work logged in the Time Spent field from the Remaining Estimate's current value.
      • Leave Estimate Unset - does not specify any time estimates for the issue. This option is displayed only if no time estimates have been specified on the issue.
      • Use Existing Estimate of ... - does not adjust the Remaining Estimate value, leaving its current value 'as is'.
      • Set to ... - adjust the Remaining Estimate value to the amount of time you specify in this field.
      • Reduce by ... - adjusts the Remaining Estimate value by subtracting the amount of time you specify in this field.

QUESTION: What does the user input? I am not seeing any actuals when the ticket is closed.

Fill in the time spent from the last update. (I am guessing that use was continously doing the 'Log work' on the issue till closure). And 'remaining estimate' as zero as it is getting closed.
