Estimates / story points

Richard Grossman July 9, 2013

Spent quite a bit of time trying the various documentation suggestions, but we still can't estimate anything. No place to put that. Custom fields doc doesn't match app, plus I'm quite sure you don't have to heavily customize Greenhopper in order to just allow everyone to enter story points on tasks.

I just finished removing every single task from a sprint one by one, because the doc indicated that you can't estimate once tasks are in a sprint. But still have no fields to enter story points.

By the way, the instructions on how to remove all the tasks from a sprint are just wrong, or maybe they go to the downloadable version and not the on-demand version - sometimes this is mentioned on the doc page, and sometimes it isn't. But I eventually found my way to right-clicking. That was hidden behind an instruction to "click the issue key" - what is an "issue key", and where is that defined in the help?

We aren't trying to do a custom version of agile Scrum, just plain vanilla.

Missing something somewhere...

Okay, got it. Only took me 3 hours to figure out that yes, you have to customize Greenhopper in order to get estmates on a task, and then do it.

In case someone comes across this question in the future: you are NOT configuring "ESTIMATES", which don't exist as an option, you are configuring "STORY POINTS". Aha!

Knowing that, follow the instructsion under "EDITING A CUSTOM FIELD" on this page:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/Configuring+a+Custom+Field#ConfiguringaCustomField-Context

It only takes about 3 minutes to apply the solution, once you know it :)

FYI: They are only editable from the PLAN tab.

Are you using the User Story issue type? By default - it's the only one that gets the Story point Custom field - you'll need to go into the Custom Field area and add another Context (or edit the current one) and add the extra issue types that you're using.

I guess I was thrown off by the fact that estimating story-points is not enabled by default: I can't envision what scenario in scrum would not include estimating. So I thought I was just missing it.

I added that to the answer.
