Error in IE 8 prevents spreadsheet from being edited

A single user at our company wants to edit an excell spreadsheet out of confluence and gets an error after a minder that the file can be potentially dangerous. After acknowledging the minder the error appears: "File could not be saved by converter."
The OS is XP highest patchlevel and the browser is IE8. The permissions of the user are the same as another user who can edit the spreadsheet. I have added the URL to the trusted sited in the internet options.
Is there another setting in IE that would allow editing the document?

I did not realize until today that the office 2010 instalation

had faults. I.e. the entry for excel in the start menu was missing.

Although it was executable when i double clicked the excel.exe

in the file explorer and seemed to run alright.

A clean uninstall and reinstall of the office suite did the trick.

Now everything works as it is supposed to.
