I've been using Confluence very successfully on debian Linux for ~2 months. I recently have been getting a Content Encoding Error page whenever I try to create or update a page. I've restarted Confluence, and I've restarted the server. Confluence it installed as standalone with its own user. It is not behind Apache.
Drafts are saved fine, but when I reopen a draft and try to save, I get the same error.
The error page is a browser-page (rather than something Confluence generated), and I'm using Firefox 18.0.1 on Ubuntu 12.10.
Error message on page:
Content Encoding Error
The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression.
Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.

Have you had a look at this article in the knowledge base?
found a couple of other pointers as well...
without some stack traces, its hard to say why?
