Can't add or remove users from groups

Deleted user November 28, 2012

Since upgrading to Jira 5.2 we are unable to add or remove users from the jira-* groups, either from the EditUserGroups page or the BulkEditUserGroups

EditUserGroups error:

Adding user 'bob' to group 'jira-administrators' failed. Server message is: com.atlassian.crowd.exception.runtime.OperationFailedException: org.springframework.ldap.PartialResultException: nested exception is javax.naming.PartialResultException Root exception is javax.naming.CommunicationException: ml.loc:389 Root exception is java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: connect .

BulkEditUserGroups error:

Removing user 'bob' from group 'jira-administrators' failed. Server message is: com.atlassian.crowd.exception.runtime.OperationFailedException: org.springframework.ldap.PartialResultException: nested exception is javax.naming.PartialResultException Root exception is javax.naming.CommunicationException: ml.loc:389 Root exception is java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: connect .

FWIW, we use Active Directory Integration, which continues to synchronize without problems.

Hi,

This usually happens due to JIRA not being able to perform a DNS lookup on the referral in the AD server root. Problems like this are most commonly caused by the server that JIRA is running on not having the same DNS server as the Active Directory server.

You can try simply disabling 'Follow Referrals' on your User Directory configuration, or fixing the DNS configuration issue.

Hope this helps,

Marcus
