Associate a version with a component

Is there a way to associate a version with a component, so you can only use the version with a specific component?

There is no configurations in JIRA to do this.

An option is to modify JIRA source. But a more viable option will be to move changes of version to workflow operations and write a workflow validator plugin whcih checks this!
