Are there any negative consequences that we should be aware of if we change a Project Workflow?

We have been using Jira for about 4 months, if we now change the workflow by adding extra buttons and statuses is there anything we need to look out for?

Not really, but if you're doing it in Jira (not Greenhopper's simplified workflow), then look out for "conditions" - if you add transitions that don't have any, then users will be able to trigger them anonymously.

Generally though, no, it's pretty much your workflow and it'll guide you through changes (e.g. if you delete a step, then migrate, it will need to know what status to move existing issues to)
