Hi Jim,

Yes, we have already opened an improvement task for User Group Picker plugin: http://bugs.kepler-rominfo.com/browse/UGP-8 regarding this matter.

Most probably, this feature will be introduced in the UGP version for new Jira 6, when this will be available.

Are you referring to the following Improvement?

Since JIRA has already implemented the auto-complete feature, I am not sure whether this will be implemented any time soon. According to the developer, this feature should be able to make the user select easier compared to multi-selecting the users.
