What happens to jira when a lot of "profields" are added?

We don't want to add a bunch of custom fields to jira because we anticipate it will decrease performance and we don't want to have redundancy for fields ie. userID, ID_of_user.  Does using profields solve this somehow by having a separate db maybe or does it just make the field visible to only one project?
