Sorting Kanban Backlog with Rank and Priority

Tanya Fraser March 21, 2018

Need some help or suggestion  to help sort our backlog.

We are  using a couple of different methods to manage the flow of work:

We use a Kanban board for ongoing team work

We use the Kanban Backlog (where we have over 300 tickets) (using Rank to sort)

We also use Structure to break down smaller projects and set due dates and priorities.

We were using Priority and due dates to sort the Kanban board and backlog, but it wasnt working well with tickets where we had 10 or so with the same priority. So we have moved to Rank, but that requires 100% manual intervention.

Is there any way we can sort issues by Priority, then tweak by Rank, using Structure for example, and having that Rank flow through to the Backlog?

Hello Tanya,

If I understand you correctly, what you have in mind is applying two different sorting at once - first sort issues by Priority and then sort them by Rank within already established order. If this is the case, it is possible to achieve such sorting in a structure - you would need to add the Sort by Priority Generator first and then to add the Sort by Rank Generator (please note that the order of adding sorters matters). But it will only show issues in a desired order in a structure and will not affect the way they are displayed on a board.

Structure can change Rank of an issue(if there is a Sort by Rank Generator/transformation added) but it would require for a user to place this issue into a different place in a structure. By default, automatic reordering of issues according to a certain field doesn’t update their actual Ranks in Jira, so it doesn’t change issues’ listing on a board. So, unfortunately, there is no way of exporting Ranks from a structure to a board for all issues, it can only be done for selected moved issues.

Please feel free to contact us at support.almworks.com if you have more questions and we will get back to you shortly.

And apologies for the late response, for some reason we didn’t receive the notification for this question submission.
