How do you get stattable fields enabled?

The documentation is pretty lack luster and I can't find where to even turn these on.  I'm trying to have a custom number field aggregated in my two dimensional search widget.  No luck.

yes, the wiki is making the assumption that one is familiar with the jira documentation : https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/Configuring+a+Custom+Field

For convenience all Stattable Searchers have (stats) in their name , so it should be easy to find the correct one for your cascading custom field.
