Update: the problem was caused by migrating Confluence OnDemand to a local install. The OnDemand version of Confluence (5.2-OD) is higher than the released version of Confluence (5.1.4), so Zen won't be able to support it until Confluence 5.2 releases.
In regards to resolution:
If you run into this issue you either need to:
1. Rollback to your previous version of Confluence so the the Zen plugin in compatible and will load.
2. If there is a Zen version compatible with the installed Confluence version you upgraded to you can follow the instructions in the following article.
