Hi,
Can a teams message be sent when number of tickets within a column on a board goes below the configured min WIP limit?
For example, we have 'To Do' column which has min WIP limit set to 4, can I trigger teams message if the number of tickets drops to 4 or less?
I can understand the desire to want to trigger messages related to WIP limits and activity on a Kanban board in Jira. It's the team's duty to respond to WIP-level changes -- so why wait until the next standup when we have Slack and Teams, right?
Today Jira doesn't seem to offer anything to help. Standard out-of-the-box Jira Cloud supports WIP limits using the totals shown at the top of the columns. That's it. There is some configuration for those limits (min and/or max per column, and whether to include Sub-tasks or not in the count), but that's all.
One might hope that Automation could trigger, or at least have access to, the WIP limits and current column counts. Then Automation could be used to send a message. But Jira Automation relies on the Jira REST API, and that API currently contains no access for anything related to Boards.
And that's an important distinction. Boards are a "view", relying on both a filter and other board-specific configuration. Much of Jira, including Automation, is oriented toward Projects or Issues which have very straightforward fields and actions. Boards are more abstract.
Feel free to offer this idea as a Product Suggestion for Jira -- if you do, post the eventual link here so we can vote for it.
Hi Anabelle,
I see this message is quite old, but I was looking exactly to see if I could create an automation for a slack message once a team meets a wip limit, but I'm struggling to compare values to our wip limit.
Did you manage to find any solution?
