Structure - Clone/Copy Structure and Apply to New Epic

RFL May 31, 2023

Hi there, we create multiple epics with the template add on and then use structure to organize and view them. However, we're having to organize every single epic manually. We have stories and we nest tasks underneath them, but we have multiple stories with multiple tasks that need to be nested, and manually grouping them takes a lot of time.

I'm wondering if there's a way to take an existing structure, with all the folders etc., and apply it to a new epic. Because we use templates every epic is identical, and it would save a good deal of time.

Let me know if that's possible, thanks!

Hi @David Niro ,

Thanks for the response, my question is whether it's possible to take that generator structure that you're referring to, and apply it to a new epic rather than re-creating the automation from scratch.

Thanks for the help!

Hi @RFL & @JB Barnes ,

It sounds like you are currently building your structures manually, but want to make use of Generators.

I would suggest starting with an Insert Generator using JQL that will bring your Epics into the structure as they are created.  Then, using an Extend Generator to add the related Stories, then a second Extend Generator that will add your Tasks.

Please let me know if this hellps!

Best,
David

You're very welcome!

You could Copy the Structure and then modify the new insert generator.  That may be the fastest way.

Would that work for you?

Best,
David

Any chance you could walk me through how to do that? It sounds like it's what I'm looking for, thanks!

@RFL ,

The document I linked above will walk you through how to copy the structure.  There's a Save as New option in the drop down that has a list of your recent structures.

Once the new structure is created, you would want to double click on the insert generator (orange text at top of structure) and adjust the query to look for a different Epic.  If you don't see the Insert Generator, make sure that you have selected "Show Generators".

If you have "Show Generators" selected and you still don't see any Generators then we will need to review in more detail how your structure was created.  For that, it would probably be best to reach out to our support team directly.

Best,
David

Hey @David Niro

Thanks so much for the help, this gets me part of the way there, but I'm wondering if there's a way to use a generator to nest tasks under stories so we can achieve this type of nest/rank system show below, but automatically, e.g. if all tasks are linked to a story, automatically place those at the level below the story. I've looked at the generators and field fields, but I'm struggling to find a way to do this. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Hi @RFL ,

I believe you will want to use a combination of Insert, Extend and Group generators to build a hierarchy like the one in your screen capture.

To determine exactly what that automation looks like without understanding more about the issues you have and how you are identifying them as bugs v new stories or tasks.

Please contact our support team directly.  They will be happy to walk through your use case and talk about how to approach your hierarchy.  You can reach them via our customer portal.

Best Regards,
David
