JQL: Project Leader has changed?

I'm looking for a way to detect and fire an event or trigger automation when the Project Leader has been changed on an existing project in the past 1 days.

When I try to use JQL:

"Project Lead" changed DURING (-1d, now())

I get the message that Project Lead field does not allow history search.

Is there any other way of systematically determining when the Project Lead has changed for a project? We need this to control updates of external systems via API calls to the remote.

JQL is for finding issues based on the data on those issues.  Project Lead is a project level object, so there's no way to get to it with JQL.

The only way I can think of doing this would be to have something that scrapes the project list (with leads) regularly, saves the previous version, and then diff's the files for updates.
