JIRA toolkit plugin - Custom field User Property Field (<255 characters) not searchable?

Hi,

Trying to use the JIRA toolkit plugin - Custom field User Property Field, but it is not a searchable field, so any suggestions on an alternative that does something similar? 

Example of the set up:

Add property to user in JIRA
JIRA administration -> User Management - > User -> Actions -> Edit Properties
Added new property key = Department , value = Support

Add default value to custom field
JIRA Administraton -> Issues -> Custom Fields -> User Property Field (<255 characters) -> configure -> Edit default value -> add assignee:Department

Assignee issue to user custom field populates with value of user property key.

If you go into edit the custom field you can see the search template, in this custom field

Search Template	There are no search templates for this custom field type.

Looks like this is a limitation on the this particular custom field. Any ideas as it doesn’t really matter too much which field type is used, however it needs to be searchable and allow me to use a default value Assignee:Department. The Assignee is the Username (User management>Users>Username) which I have added a property to called Department.
