Can we include display name of user mentioned in a comment in Slack notifications?

Kevin Dangoor September 4, 2019

We have a couple of Automation for Jira Cloud rules that send notifications to Slack with the description of an issue or the body of a comment. Those comment bodies currently include stuff like "thanks [~accountid:ZZZ]", which is not helpful for providing context to the people reading the notification in Slack.

Is there anything that can be done about this? I read the GDPR page in the Automation docs but it doesn't seem to cover the case where we're trying to display text that includes an accountid within it.

Hi Kevin,

This is now available. You can read up on it at - https://docs.automationforjira.com/issues/dealing-with-markup.html

Hi Kevin,

So we don't support this right now, but the good news is we're currently working on https://codebarrel.atlassian.net/browse/AUT-497 and should ship this real soon (in the next couple of days!).

The problem right now is that basically when you access a text field or comment, you get back Jira's wiki markup, which as you say has user mentions in the weird accountId format that you mentioned.

When we ship the above, you'll be able to reference a field's text or html rendered representation. So you'll be able to reference {{comment.body.text}} or {{comment.body.html}} (or {{issue.description.html}} etc) in your Slack message, which will then show the user's display name instead of the account id reference.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Andreas

Hi Andreas,

That's great!

Thanks for the quick response, and I'm happy (and not surprised) that you're on the case. Automation for Jira has been a delight for us.

Kevin
