user email address as jira email sender

William JUTEAU July 3, 2014

Hello,

Is it possible to configure Jira to use the user email adress as the sender of the notifications ?

Presently, a generic email address is configured in the Outgoing email configuration.

I would like to allow users to reply directly to emails sent by jira on events

Thanks for the help

No, this is not possible or generaly desireable, for the following reasons:

1. Your mailserver would have to allow the JIRA server to mail out, masquerading, as all users, your system admin will likely not want this.

2. Replies to those email will go to the user themselves not JIRA, comments will not get converted from email, data will be lost, this is not how JIRA works and will confuse people.

Presently, a generic email address is configured in the Outgoing email configuration.

What actually occurs in JIRA is that the NAME of the user is injected into the Personal part of the address, the outbound SMTP from: address remains whatever the JIRA default (your generic reference) is.

You can, with a Mail Handler. Mail Handlers need to be associated with a Mailbox to get mail. If you were somehow able to do what you describe, hwo exactly would JIRA be able to 'get' those replies? It can't. You need to setup an inbound mailbox that is likely the same as your outbound mailbox.
