You can follow this documentations:

 https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/Upgrading+JIRA+Using+a+Rapid+Upgrade+Method

 https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/Important+Version-Specific+Upgrade+Notes

My recommendation steps (but read documentations carefuly):

  1. create two new JIRA instances beside older instance (4.4.5 and 6.3) and compare and edit side by side configuration files in old instance with new instance (NOT copy full files!)
  2. create XML backup in old version -> restore in 4.4.5 -> check integrity checker and error log
    1. if both is OK -> create XML backup in 4.4.5 -> restore in 6.3 -> check integrity checker and error log
    2. if not then repair it -> if it is now OK continue with A option
  3. copy attachments from old version and copying to new
  4. if is all OK without error in Atlassian Support Tools and in Integrity checker then make JIRA outages and repeat steps 2 and 3
  5. archiving and compress OLD version

Thanks a lot guys. I going through this upgrade and setting up 6.3.12 in a new instance. When i am running the JIRA service, its giving me this error Windows could not start the Atlassian JIRA on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 1. I dont wee much info on error log.

Hi Rishi,

The upgrade should be pretty straight forward. Just follow the steps on https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/Upgrading+JIRA

Could you explain a little more about the username changes?
