programmatically backup and restore Automation Rules

since Automation Rules are not included in Jira Backup, how can I programatically download and upload them, if needed? Is there a REST API for it that can be used? I couldn't find a documentation for it? This is essential as we, as Atlassian customer, are required to do our own backups in case of destructive changes within our responsibility.

Hi @Michael Aglas

Agreeing with other posters that this is a missing feature, given the criticality of automation rules.  You can search the community for the various work-arounds tried for backup, version control, documentation, etc. of rules.

The missing piece to support backups is the REST API functions, and you may vote for / watch that suggestion here to see progress:

Kind regards,

Hi @Michael Aglas ,

You are right that backup is the responsibility of the user and automated backups are important part of Jira data protection.

I'm part of GitProtect, a backup & Disaster Recovery software provider for Jira Software, Jira Service management, and Jira Work Management. We help Jira users to automate their backup processes: it's possible to schedule your backup when you need to meet your organization, legal or compliance requirements. Moreover, it's esy to control backup performance form the dashboard, and if there is a need to initiate the Jira data restore.

You can learn more about GitProtect and try the backups solution (free during 14 day-trial period or free for up to 10 users)  on Atlassian Marketplace:

Hope this answer will be useful. If you have more questions, you can always contact our team.

Have a nice day,

Kind regards,

Well, can I backup Assets as well? And addons? Could not find a userful docu from the marketplace itself...

You could have simply said, there is no addon backup possibility for Jira...

Hi @Michael Aglas ,

As far as I know, there is no API to work with Automation rules.

You probably already know that you can export your automation rules manually. Depending on how important it is for you to include these rules in your backups, it might be possible to use tools like selenium or playwright to automate the clicks in Jira's UI.

There's also a few backup/restore apps available in the marketplace. If I remember correctly, none of them support automations just yet, but it might be a good idea to let the vendors know that you care about that.

Hope that helps,

I just don't understand why it is not part of the Jira backup... it's unacceptable. And for every addon it is the same and it seems no one cares about it. As long as you don't need them...

Totally agree, I would love to have an API to work with automations. Unfortunately, as a marketplace vendor, there really isn't much we can do apart from repeatedly asking  Atlassian for that.
