need to display status as an icon not as text

I seem to have changed some configuration somewhere that controls how jira issue statuses are displayed. I would like them displayed as they were at the start as icons (and text) and now they are just displayed as coloured boxes with the text in them. Where is the configuration that controls this? Any help gratefully recieved.
