migration of 6.3 to 6.4 then upgrade

Dante Delia November 16, 2015

I have need to migrate JIRA 6.3  to a new VM on another network.

I was about to install 6.4 and follow migration instructions when I noticed the

new 7.0 version.

It will not be possible for me to upgrade my existing production host

and then migrate.   Will it be okay for me to do the following:

1) install JIRA 6.4 on new VM.

2) migrate files/database data from old VM running 6.3 to new

VM (following migration instructions), and then, finally

3) upgrade "new" JIRA 6.4 installation on new VM to JIRA Software 7.0

I wanted to ask before beginning the migration, thank you

Hi Joanne - did you have any success going from 6.3.x directly to 7.1?  we were hoping to do the same and I was just going to install 7.1 on a new server and then do an export of the data from the old version into new...   Sounds too easy...

Hi  Joanne

In the end, we actually did a clean install of 7.0 and started with a fresh database.  Essentially we started over with no projects, and left the old version behind (there were only a few old projects on it).

I can say that I did  test migrating the database from 6.3 on the old host to a clean install of 7.0 on our new host and encountered some datatype issues with Oracle.   Unfortunately, I don't remember the details other than it was in fact something preventable (or fixable after the fact).    Sorry I can't provide any info on that.

Hi Delia, we are looking to do the same - was it successful for you?  I am trying to work out if I can just upgrade from 6.3 to 7 when moving to another server and was interested if it worked for you?
