limit notification to field update

I have a custom field that is used for project management only. Is there a way to not send out a notification if that field is updated? From the looks of the notifications it appears that if any field changes send out a notification. This creates more notifications than needed and just clutter in people's inbox.

Notifications can't be limited by field. You would have to turn off notifications for all updates and just notify on transition events.
