hey,

is there a possibility to block an epic by its tasks. So that you can only change the epic status to done when all tasks are finished?

Hi @Sascha Kuntz

I don't believe this is possible natively; you could try the "Sub-Task Blocking Condition" now that all parent/child relationships use the same field - but it likely still just work for Sub-tasks.

Edit: I tried this, didn't seem to work for me in relation to Epic/children.

---

You could use Automation as a native workaround - for example...

  • Create a checkbox field at the Epic-level - All Children Closed? - with one option, "Yes"
  • Check the field's box using Automation if all children are closed
  • Use this field in the Workflow, using a "Value Field" condition

Or, you could...

  • Check when the Epic transitions to Done
  • If any child issues remain open
  • Then reverse the transition
  • And let the initiator know all child issues need to be closed first

---

You could also look for an App on the Marketplace, which could add this type of condition - check out Apps such as...

---

Let us know your thoughts!

Hey @Stephen Wright _Elabor8_ ,

thank you for your help. I will try to check remaining child issues when epic transitions to done with an automation, maybe that will fix my problem.

have a nice day

Hello @Sascha Kuntz and thank you again @Stephen Wright _Elabor8_ for mentioning us!

I am part of the Decadis team and I would like to propose a solution using our app JWT for Jira Cloud.

It is possible to check if any some issues under the epic are in a certain status with the JWT Jira expression validator . Please, visit the use case Block a transition if some issues under an epic are not in a certain status of our documentation if you are open to use our app.

If you need more information about it, please, feel free to reply to us in this thread or to create a request in our Support Portal.

Best regards,

Vicente

Hi @Sascha Kuntz ,

You can achieve this using the JMWE Linked Issues Status validator

This use case is described here in our documentation.

If you have any questions, please raise a support request from our portal

BTW I am from Appfire, a vendor of JMWE.

Thanks,

Reshma

Hi @Sascha Kuntz

If you are open to using apps and looking for a ready-to-use solution. We've developed the Linked Issues Validator available as part of the Workflow Building Blocks for Jira app.

Blocking an epic transition is quite simple in it:

Additionally, you can filter which child types should be checked or require that at least one child issue exists.

I would appreciate it if you could give it a try.

Cheers
