in which directory do I place additional jira issue type avatars?

I know how to customize issue type avatars.  But what I'd like to do is put my additional issue type avatars on the server such that they are all easily selectable when we go in to edit issue types.  Rumor has it that they'll show up if the png files exist in the correct directory.  Which directory might that be?

<JIRA HOME>/data/avatars

Try uploading one by hand, then see what shows up in there, and mimmic it. You will also need to insert an entry into the avatar table in the DB.
