how to see the epics that a sub-task relates to in the sprint board

Niv Penso December 27, 2016

Hi guys,

We are working with user-stories and sub-task. each user-story is connected to an epic. for some reason when I create sub-tasks and add them into the sprint board I don't see their epic that they are connected to.

Is there a way to see the epic of a sub task?

Thanks

Hi @Niv Penso,

There is no direct link from your sub-task to your epic, so there is no direct way of showing the epic on the sub-task immediately.

However, sub-tasks are by default displayed on a sprint board directly linked to the story they are associated with. So from the story, you can see the associated epic, as shown on the screenshot below:

In that sample, swimlanes on the board are based on stories. But you could base your swimlanes on Epics as well. Thus, your sub-tasks reside immediately below the epic the belong to:

Again, note how the sub-tasks in this case slightly indent below their parent story and how you can also read the Epic on the story, if you add the Epic Name field to display on the board cards.

If a sub-task were to be updated to a different status than its parent story, you will still see a clear reference to that parent story on your board. Having Epic-based swimlanes saves you the effort of looking for the parent story to find the Epic name:
