how to change a project key?

I'm trying to create a new project but it says the Key I want is being used by another project.  The interesting thing is that we do not have another project with that key.  How do I go in and edit a key to try and convince the system the the project it says has the key I want to use does not have that key?

You'd have to do it at the database level. I don't know if Atlassian Support would do this or not but that would be the route to do it for JIRA Cloud.

More than likely you've used the key in the past (deleted a project or renamed the key). The system preserves the key so that things can continue to get redirected to the proper location.
