how do you remove the labels field

We are in the process of upgrading to JIRA 6.3.  We have noticed there is a new field, labels.

Is there anyway to remove this field?  We do not plan to use the field.  Can this be removed?

Remove it from screens and hide it in field configuration to be on the safe side.

I assume your JIRA is 4.2 or lower at the moment - that's where Labels were added into Jira.
