epic story hierarchy

epics seem to be treated like any other issue on an agile board vs a hierarchy of stories.  while issues are grouped under an epic, when you start progress on an epic it lands on a board.  just wondering if i should even bother to put them through workflow statuses?  thanks!

An epic is more-or-less just a label: Some teams apply complex workflows to Epics though. It is what you make of it.
