emails through JIRA exceptionally slow

Anyone experienced emails taking up to 3 minutes where a cc takes only seconds?

Emails are send out every 1 minute by default. Did you change the service settings to 3 mins? Another reason for delay is if you have too many services configured. JIRA has just two threads doing all those. And if both are blocked doing other services, mails can get delayed.

no changes made to default. we are new users just in development so are still in the learning curve. not even sure where to change the default.

Ah, in that case, need to check the mail logs. Enable email logging in https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/Logging+and+Profiling and check the outgoing mail logs under jirahome/log and see what is happening.

May be the SMTP server is having issues.
