create user not letting me specify username

Linda Seley November 17, 2014

I've created a number of users over the last few weeks in JIRA On Demand.  This morning when I try to create a new user I'm only given the option to enter an email address, check if they have JIRA access, and modify the email options (days until invitation expires).  At the top it says "Fill in the information below to create new users. We'll email your teammates instructions for logging in."  I want to be able to specify their username, not let JIRA give me a generated username (like u30).  I have both administrators and site-admins groups assigned to my ID.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I came across this thread because I have the exact same problem.

We need to be able to create usernames with a specific pattern. Also we want to make sure that everything is properly named. Since the default login page is confusing for our users, I have to change it by signing in as the user and change the default homepage. The only way to control it is doing it by myself.

I hope this will be changed again in the future. In the meantime I will go with the fake-email-address approach when creating users.

BTW: If you have a google account you can add "+user123" before the "@" to your eMail address
(e.g. firstname.lastname+userXYZ@gmail.com). This will send an email to your account instead on a round trip around the internets and there won't be any problem with duplicate entries because you can define unique addresses each time.

For anyone who's having the same issue see https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/AOD-7576. Also, it is now possible (whew!) to change a username, see https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/AOD-7010. At this point I'm going to create my users with their funky names and fake email addresses, and then change the username after the fact. Kludgy but it'll work until they fix it, hopefully soon.

It's not a bug, it's a feature... take a look at "Improvements and features added to user management - 16 November 2014 to 21 November 2014": https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/AOD/16+November+2014+to+21+November+2014

What a crap, now we can't use our company user names, great "improvement"!

Thanks for the link Bartosz. If it would create the users like smith30 based on an email address of smith@company.com then, while I wouldn't be happy, I'd be able to live with it (assuming there were 29 other smith usernames in JIRA). But u30? Not so much.

Facing the same problem in our On-Demand deployment.

An update : I just looked at some screenshots I'd done a couple weeks ago.  There were three buttons, "Create user", "Invite users", and "Google Apps".  The "Create user" button took me to https://<company>.atlassian.net/admin/users/add, as it does now, but it had the Username, Name, Email address, and Password fields.  Now I only have two buttons, "Create user" and "Google Apps", and the "Create user" button is behaving like "Invite users" used to.

We have exactely the same problem. It's important that we can select the username. It might be possible to change the username in on-premise installation - but it's not possible in the ondemand version - therefore we need the possibility to define the username on creation.
