Hi,

You can't do this. A 4.4 xml backup will never work in such a new version.

You will have to download 4.4, restore the XML there, update any plugin and addon to latest version then upgrade to maybe 5.0.. I say maybe because the last time i was at 4.4 was a very long time.

A while back i had to upgrade jira 6.2.1 -> 7.1.9, and to achive that i had to go this path:

6.2.1 -> 6.3.15

6.3.15 -> 6.4.13

6.4.13 -> 7.1.9

Reason for this is that so many fundamental changes happened to their database/filesystem between these upgrades, there was NO way to get around it. This upgrade would have taken 6.5 hours, but i managed to get it down to 1.5 hours using these take-aways:

  • Don't reindex between the upgrades, wait until you made the last upgrade as this just creates indexes for the UI, ignore that you don't see assigned issues (or issues in general)
  • After each upgrade, upgrade all plugins starting with UPM, if anything is incompatible, just disable them till you see a updated version and re-enabled them then.
  • Save you dbconfig.xml, cacerts, server.xml, setenv.sh, web.xml and other files that might have been modifed. On each upgrade you will see a bunch of files that are modified. Created folders named after the current version and copy them all there. This allows for a fast fixes once you reached the destination version.
  • After all upgrades are done, restore SSL settings, cacerts files. Don't just restore server.xml, but look at both the new files and your original and implement the diffrences.
  • Rebuild your indexes.

Hi, the existing JIRA we're going to migrate was 3.5. we have successfully migrate the xml data to 4.4.5, we did export from there and imported it to 6.4.

Looks fine so far. the site is up and running. as for plugins, an update is needed in my opinion.

Btw, problem has been fixed by adding REFERENCES grant to the db user we're using.

You might be right on that. Our Jira instance uses a plethora of plugins and addons that all had data that needed to be migrated, and some of them failed misserably on the longer version leaps and was the reason i stepped it like this.
