What type and version of Java should we be using?

We are running version 6.2 of JIRA. We are experiencing performance issues. Today our CPU usage was up at around 100% and JIRA was inaccessible. We had to reboot to resolve the problem. One of our developers suggested we change from the open source version of Java that we are currently using to an Oracle version of Java which is faster.

What type and version of Java should we be using?

Always stick with the officially supported ones unless you have very good reasons not to.  In other words, your developer is right about swapping - not necessarily because it's faster, but if you were to raise this with Atlassian (and in fact, any of the partners) the first response will be "could you try it on a supported version please"

Note that they don't mention specific releases of Java - simple rule there is "use the latest one", currently 1.7_72 if memory serves.

There could be other reasons for the bad performance like processor speed (hardware) , number of users accessing Jira , size of your Jira instance , etc . As Nic suggested use the latest compatible Java and increase Jira heap memory for better performance.
