What is the best way to deal with duplicate users in a cloud migration scenario?

In this particular scenario there is a Jira Server with 3 directories: two AD and one local Jira.

The Instance Health Check came up with "Duplicate user accounts" as a warning.  The duplicates were also flagged by the JCMA - email addresses associated with multiple accounts.

The Atlassian documentation states: If an unwanted duplicate user account exists in the Jira internal user directory, delete or deactivate the account from the User management system settings page.

That solution is not an option in this case. In the user management section, each duplicated user only appears once, and the account shown is the AD account - this I assume is because the Jira internal directory is 3rd in the list.

What is the best way to handle this? Should I change the order of directories to put the local Jira directory at the top and then delete the accounts? Are there potential issues with this approach? (Login failures, issues with the AD user?)

Hi @Rob Horan ,

Cloud doesn't allow duplicat usernames however the same email address can be used (although not recommended).

The order of the directories won't solve the warning as the accounts will still exist.

The question may be, why is the need to have duplicate accounts from different directories?

Its not a need, its an existing problem to be solved.

As an existing problem, the admin of the tools should be responsible to make sure the directories are up to date and regular clean ups should be done in timely manner.

Unfortunately this happens to the vast majority of us and the clean up is done in the last moment due migrations or some kind of situation which took us to a difficult situation and a clean up was needed for our systems

@Sam Bartolome - understood, but my question wasn't about what the end state should look like.  I'm trying to figure out how to get to that point. Specifically, the actions that need to be taken; documented directions would be ideal if they exist.

I'm looking for a recipe.  If I say I want to make mofongo and the person I ask says it should be hearty and shaped well and have a nice balance of crunch and smooth textures, I'd know how to judge the final product but still wouldn't know how to make it.

Not sure if you would like to do the migration by yourself or using one of the Atlassian partners. Either way, the duplicated accounts needs to be cleaned up otherwise the migration can't be completed (as far as I know).

You can check further with JCMA, install it and give it a try. Nothing can go wrong to install it and assess the current situation you have

The link in the prior post is broken but I believe this might be the correct match to replace it:
