What happens with burndown & velocity chart if story points changes afterwards?

Jeroen Thoelen January 25, 2018

What if i make changes to the amount of story points, after finishing them, to the burndown chart and to the velocity chart?

Example: A story is estimated with 3 story points. But after finishing it, the real time spent was 8 story points. So I adjust the amount of the story. But what will happen to the burndown chart and to the velocity chart. Will this change be taken into account, or are the charts based on initial estimations?

thanks!

Hi

You realise that you shouldn't be doing this? once you've refined an issue, and definitely once it's in a sprint, you shouldn't just decide to change the story points. You can use the knowledge to influence your estimates on other issues.

So ... to answer the question, the burndown and velocity are not based on initial estimates, so they will change

In both charts you will see this change reflected if the change is done during the sprint.

If points are changed on the issue then in velocity chart "committed vs completed" will change with completed going up. And in the burndown chart you will see "scope" change

So for the burndown chart: gray and red line will go up?

and for the velocity: will the gray bar (committed) also go up? or only the green one?
