What happens if we do not renew an existing Jira Server (Jira Software) license ?

andrianf May 4, 2021

Hello,

What happens if we do not renew an existing Jira Server (Jira Software) license ?

From what I heard we will not be able to Upgrade to the next version. Is that all ?

What will happen to the plugins ? Will the plugins function ?

Also, if we do not renew the plugin licenses what will happen ? My guess is this is a question for individual vendors. Anyway asking incase if it not the case.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, @andrianf !

Without renewing your license, you:

- lose support from Atlassian;

- it is impossible to update Jira to a new version;

Jira will work as usual =)

Plugins have their own licensing, if you do not renew them - they also continue to work, but you lose the ability to update them and support from the Vendor.

Thanks @Alexander Bondarev

If we later decide that we want to renew the licenses after expiry date can we still do that ?

You can, yes, although the way the scheme works is that you will be asked to pay for the missing months.  So if you expire in January, and renew in April, you will get a new licence that lasts until January next year.  Obviously, leave it over a year, and you might as well buy new.

But, please bear in mind that you will not be able to renew anything past February 2024 - server is going away then - it all becomes unsupported and there won't be any new releases (even patches) after the end of Feb 24.  It'll carry on working - server licences are "perpetual", but unsupported, unmaintained and no upgrades happening.

Oh, and new licences have also gone away already, in preparation for the end date.
