What does "This status is managed internally by JIRA Agile" signify?

I am cleaning up unused statuses in our JIRA instance (v.6.4.11) and a number of issues have the comment:

This status is managed internally by JIRA Agile

What does this signify?  I can delete them, but will they come back because Agile decides it needs them?  How were they created in the first place?

If people use a Agile Simplified Workflow, statuses can be created at will via the Board Configuration of their Agile Board.
