We have Teams working from different projects that were able to associate their Features to a single "Enterprise Release" that was defined in a different project. That seems to contradict what the article says.

The JIRA Version belongs to a single project on which it can be added to the issues of that project alone. So you can say the issue ABC-1 with v1 is the same issue with DEF-1 v1.

Perhaps if you can elaborate more on what you want to accomplish so that we can suggest other alternatives.

The difficulty is that (ABC) v1 is a different version to (DEF) v1, despite having the same name.
