User not receiving email notifications

We have created a user customer field called owner and approver in order to add users to a specific issue so then they can follow the status and changes to the issue by receiving email notifications, but they do not receive any email notif on any change made on the issue. Any suggestions ? We use the default notification scheeme.

Have you added your custom fields to your default notification scheme to receive emails when an event happens?
