Upgrading from Jira 6.4.12 to 7.5

Felix Martel October 10, 2017

Hi folks,

As the title says, we've been trying to upgrade from Jira 6.4.12 to 7.5 this past week. Basically, the new server won't start with the 6.4.12 database. Research tells us there are intermediate steps for migration, but from there it gets confusing and complicated.

Have spent the better part of the day sifting through release notes and threads about the process. When we migrated from Jira 5 to Jira 6 about 18 months ago, there was a clear matrix that basically detailed step-by-step what you had to do (first migrate to version x.x.x, then to x.x.x, and so on). Not finding that now for the move to Jira 7.

In absence of clear instructions, we're thinking we'll need to download every release since 6.4.12 and install them progressively, which could take awhile...

Can someone point me in the right direction ?

Thanks !

It is best to go from 6.4 to 7.0.latest, then from 7.0 to 7.5 in one step.

The big hurdle is the 6 -> 7 jump, and there was stuff removed from 7.1 which sometimes means trying to go to 7.1+ from 6 won't work.

If you have Jira Agile installed on 6, then run the upgrade with Jira Software, not Jira Core.
