Upgrade Jira from 7.12.3 to 8.x

Andrii Striletskyi September 9, 2019

Hi team!

As we know , after upgrade to Jira 8 is new index directory has been created and old indeces will be cleaned up (we do manual upgrade). So , user will not see any issues (returned by filter , issues on dashboard etc) until reindex will be finished. We have large servers with big number of users and reindex will take a time. We want to know If we have an ability to reduce downtime by not cleaning up old indexes. Thanks

Hi Andrii,

It is possible to disable the re-index for an upgrade, by adding the value upgrade.reindex.allowed=false to the file <jira-home>/jira-config.properties , However disabling the re-index is only recommended to do to speed up the upgrade portion when testing the upgrade for errors.  A re-index on the data and a post re-index check for data integrity would still be required as a follow up as major change take place in the data set during the upgrade and the reindex correct the inconsistencies between the data changes and the indexed data.

Moving forward, there is an option on the Jira Datacenter platform after 8.X, that has a integrated Zero Downtime Upgrade feature that does allow for a rolling upgrade and index operation so it does not disrupt the end users.  If this is something that would be a requirement for your organization I would recomend checking out the feature, additional details on this can be seen here:

Regards,
Earl
