Hey Zhang,

Basically, the steps to be followed are:

  1. Take the XML backup of your 4.0 instance
  2. Set-up the latest version of JIRA (which is now 6.0.8)
  3. Copy over the Attachment folder from your old JIRA to the new JIRA
  4. Copy over the installed-plugin folder from your old JIRA to the new JIRA
  5. Perform the importing process.

It's always advisable to perform the upgrading process in a test instance first, before you do it in your production instance.

I hope that was helpful.

Start with https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/Upgrading+JIRA

I always recommend reading ALL the release notes for every mid-level version you will be jumping (i.e. 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, etc)
