Update button not avalablefor Jira Service Desk in the versions & licenses section

I am currently using Service Desk version 3.1.10 and I would really like to get Service Desk 3.3.1 as the Customer Notifications feature that seems to have been added for this version is something I need to get one of my teams to go live.

However, when I go into the Versions & Licenses section, there is no update button for JIRA Service Desk. How do I get the latest version of Service Desk installed? Do I have to do this the old fashioned way of turning off the application and running the 3.3.1 exe from the server?

We are currently running JIRA Server version 7.1.2

JSD 3.3 require minimum version of JIRA 7.2, hence why you're not seeing the update button. Have a look at JSD 3.2 and 3.3 upgrade note.
