In board settings-->swimlanes, there is a drop down "base swimlanes on" where we can choose epic/stories/queries/projects. what is the use of "projects"? It will anyway show only one project right? or this can be used to show tickets across projects ?

If you have an underlying query that includes issues from multiple projects, you can divide the issues based on projects!

A board can hold tickets from one or more projects. It depends on the board's filter.
If your filter says something like
Project category = "ClientA"
then all the projects in that project category will be in scope of the board.
Project in ("ABC", "XYZ")
will pull in all the tickets from these 2 projects.
So in those scenarios, the swimlane by project helps
