Slow JIRA instance after upgrade

atlassian member October 16, 2017

Hi,

We're experiencing slow performances since upgrading from JIRA 5.2.5 to JIRA 7.1.10

Here are the details about our environment:

  • Windows Server 2008
  • JDK 8
  • RAM : 32 Go
  • JVM : Min = 20 Go, Max = 25 Go
  • More than 700 sessions simultaneously
  • Around 900 000 issues
  • CPU 8 cores
  • Database server : SQL Server 2008

JIRA 7 running with Java 8 is supposed to have better performances, so why these issues

Best regards

How would you characterize this slow performance?  Start time?  page load times?  Something else you have noticed?

Given the size of your environment, it is probably safe to say that your Jira instance is an enterprise level environment per our JIRA Sizing Guide - Atlassian Documentation.  As such I would recommend reviewing that document to make sure that you are providing the system with an appropriate level of resources.   For example that size environment is listed as

This should be a top of the line server with enterprise grade processing power (e.g. 6 quad cores or more) and the highest possible I/O performance (e.g. Raid 10, Solid State Disks).

That guide also explains that we would expect the server running Jira to have at least 128G of system memory or more.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your reply.

JIRA becomes slow everyday almost around the same time (11:00am), note that it's a dedicated server and no other application is running on this server. JIRA becomes completely slow and ends up inaccessible if we don't restart the JIRA service, and that's what we do to deblock the situation!

We're aware of the hardware specs recommanded but we would like to know what's exactly causing slow performances, JIRA 5.2.5 wasn't slow at all even with the same specs.

Can the logs cause performance issues on JIRA 7.1.10? We've noticed that JIRA 7 logs are huge (148Go) compared to when we were running JIRA 5 (20Go)

Nothing has changed other than the upgrade itself (JAVA 6 to JAVA 8, and JIRA 5.2.5 to JIRA 7.1.10)

Best regards
